Where should I start?
That depends on what it is that you wish to do and how you like to do things.
The site offers you a trusted place to find information on absolutely anything and helps you make the most of books and reading.
- If you are looking for general information on any kind of subject and you prefer to ask someone directly, then Enquire is the starting place for you.
- If you prefer to look for things for yourself, then Discover is where you should start.
- If books and reading are your thing then Read is the best place to start.
- To find out more about the People’s Network and England’s public libraries, then try About Us
More information and help with the Enquire, Discover and Read services is available, but for further help with using the web and this site in general, please read on.
Are you new to the web?
If you’re new to the web you can get free help at UK online centres in public libraries and from the new myguide website.
The BBC Webwise(http://www.bbc.co.uk/webwise/) site is also a useful place for people new to the web.
Identifying and using links on this site
Links are text or buttons on a web page which when selected, take you to a different page or action a particular feature. Some links are provided in the same place on every page, so that key information and services are always just one link away. Refer to ‘how to move around the site’ for an overview of these links. Other links are provided as text links within the contents of web pages.
Links on this site are identifiable in several ways:
- If you use the access key system provided on this site a link will be read out by a screen reader to alert you to activate the link. See the section on access keys for further information.
- For sighted visitors, if you are using a mouse to move around the site, the shape of the cursor will change when you hover over a link, signifying that you should click on the link if you wish to.
- The use of colours, bold and underlined text are used to display links. Different characteristics will be displayed as you hover over or select a link.
How to move around the site
To help you move around the site more easily links can be found in the following ways:
- Pages which contain general information are available at the top of each page. This includes a sitemap, contact information, details about the People’s Network and a link to the homepage.
- To use our online services – Enquire, Discover and Read – select one of the boxes presented on the homepage or choose from the menu of links presented on the left side of the screen on other pages.
- When using an online service, a sub-section of links relating to that service will appear on the left side of the screen.
- Legal and policy statements are provided in the footer section at the bottom of each page. These link to our accessibility statement, terms and conditions, privacy policy and copyright pages.
